Youth Aquatic Team Sports

All youth sports are available to youth aged 7-17. All programs are for all different types of skill levels. Swim assessments are highly recommended prior to registration. All participants should be able to pass Level 4 swimming skills which include jumping in deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards and returning swimming elementary backstroke 25 yards, Swimming breaststroke 15 yards, returning to starting point swimming back crawl 15 yards and submerge and swim 3-5 body lengths underwater, return to surface.

PlayLA Springboard Dive Team

Season Offered: Summer, Fall

Springboard diving is classified as an art as well as a sport. Divers compete in one-meter springboard events throughout the season. The diver must have total body control and good kinesthetic awareness. Practices are designed to build endurance, refine proper technique and execution of a dive from start to finish.

PlayLA Swim Team

Season Offered: Winter/Spring, Summer, Fall

Swim Team is designed to improve swimming stroke and technique, while participating in regional competitions citywide. Practices are designed to build endurance, efficient strokes, starts, dives, turns and finishes. All year round facilities will be offering a "USA Swim Team" in Fall of 2024, which will provide additional opportunities for youth to compete in more events and provide more education for parents to support their athletes.

PlayLA Artistic Swim Team

Season Offered: Winter/Spring, Summer

Artistic Swimming is also known as Synchronized Swimming. It's a hybrid form of swimming, dance and gymnastics, consisting of swimmers performing a synchronized routine of elaborate moves in the water, accompanied by music. It demands good water skills, strength, endurance, flexibility, good breathing control when underwater, and precise timing.

Pool-Jr Lifeguard

Season Offered: Summer

The Junior Lifeguard Program is offered to youth aged 9 through 17. Participants must be able to pass level 6 or can swim 200 yards crawl stroke and 100 yards medley (25 yards of each stroke: breaststroke, back crawl, sidestroke and front crawl. Jr. Lifeguards are introduced to skills which include lifeguard skills, water safety, CPR, first aid, emergency response, snorkeling, small crafts, and assisting in teaching swim lessons. The primary objective is teaching Jr. lifeguards the importance of safety in the aquatic environment and the value of teamwork. The daily practices include lectures and workouts which are intended to prepare participants for competitions and field trips. Jr. Lifeguard participants will receive a uniform and participation award at the end of the season.

PlayLA Water Polo Team

Season Offered: Winter/Spring, Summer

Water Polo is a sport similar to both soccer and basketball. When played there are seven players on the field at a time, 6 field players and 1 goalkeeper. The basic fundamental skills of swimming include, treading water (egg-beater), passing (ball skills) and shooting the ball into the goal. Practices are designed to build endurance, teach the basics of games, and focused on teamwork. Youth will be placed in teams based on their age.

Open Water-Jr Lifeguard

Season Offered: Summer

Sites: Cabrillo Beach and Hansen Dam

The Junior Lifeguard Program is offered to youth aged 9 through 17. Tryouts are held prior to the start of the season. Participants will learn basic lifeguarding skills, rescue skills, basic CPR and first aid. Physical activities include open water swimming, distance and sand running, standup and prone paddling, kayaking and snorkeling. Field trips can include going to local beaches, surfing and kayaking.

Camp Splash Summer 2025

Days: Monday - Friday
Hours: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Program Requirements:

  • Ages 7-12
  • No prior swimming skills required
  • Loves the water

Activities:

  •  Small group swim lessons provided daily
  •  Water group activities/games 
  • Water safety lessons
  •  Arts and crafts 
  • Bi weekly field trips 
  • Team building 

 Additional Information: 

  •  Qualifying locations will have lunch provided

PlayLA Youth Kayaking

Learn to Kayak is a program designed for youth to learn basic kayaking skills through kayak education. Participants will learn:

  • Identify parts of a kayak
  • Launching a kayak
  • Basic navigation skills
  • Introduction to knot tying
  • Steering and paddling safety
  • Paddling in an open water environment
  • Identification of hazards in the water
  • Team building exercises
  • and more!

Transportation may be provided to and from the assigned location if needed.

All necessary equipment will be provided to participants which include kayak, life vest, oars, and T-shirt.

Fall 2024: Learn to Kayak Flyer

PlayLA: Learn to Surf

Learn to Surf is a program designed for youth to learn basic oceanic safety through surf education. Participants will learn: Identification of hazards at the beach, Body surfing, Paddling in & around the surf zone and Popping up. All necessary equipment will be provided to participants which include surfboards, wetsuits, rashguard, T-shirt & shorts. Program Requirements: Age 9-17, Swim 100 yards prior to registration. Transportation may be provided to and from the beach if needed. Transportation pick up will begin at 7am. Estimated arrival at the beach is 9 am. Departure from the beach will be at 1pm. Arrival time back to the sites will be 3pm. The first session date is scheduled to be at Carbrillo beach, the remaining days will be at Venice Beach. Beach sites are subject to change based on water conditions.
